Might As Well Face It Georgia: You're Being Annexed

So, the international community has gotten both Russia and Georgia to sign a cease-fire. A peace treaty of sorts. Requiring both sides military's to return to pre-aggression status. Russia back into South Ossetia and Abkhazia, and Georgian forces back into Georgia proper. Okay, great. Now what?

Now,... nothing.

Scattered and unconfirmed reports say that 'a few' Russian personnel carries, unladen with troops were seen heading back into Russia from South Ossetia. But even more reports, also not independently confirmed, have been seen moving from areas around Gori and the like, heading TOWARDS the area around Tbilisi. There have also been reports, also, also, still not independently confirmed, (which there seems to be a lot of during this war) of Russian SS-21 missile launchers having been moved into South Ossetia. SS-21's range would allow them to effectively strike Tbilisi itself. Russian officials have denied this has happened.

But what of the Cease-fire agreement?

What of it? is basically what Russia has said of it. They've been exploiting a loophole in the agreement that there was 'no set withdrawal date' in the agreement. Russian officials have advised that they are in fact, withdrawing their troops. But that has yet to be seen on the scale that they entered the region. Let alone noticed by the Georgian people themselves.

Medvedev has spent some time on a parade ground recently, pinning some medals on about 30 Russian troops and Officers. While at the same time, there are a reported 140 thousand or so Georgian refugees from Tbilisi alone. In just a general perspective, that kinda makes the five to ten thousand South Ossetia refugees fleeing into Russia at the start of all this, pale a bit in comparison.

So far, six U.S. aide flights have arrived in Georgia to assist those refugees. An untold amount from other countries as well, has also made their way to Georgia. But until we have a full withdrawal, by both parties, there is little else that can really be done to patch things up.

For now, the majority of the information that we've thus far received from the region, HAS TO BE taken with a grain of salt. There really is no way to determine the specifics of the engagement, without having objective reporting. And since even media personnel have been targeted in the region, it's not likely that 'objectivity' will reign supreme.

There's some more details to date, available from the AP wire.
